This Rwanda Rukeri OP is organic, grows at 1600 meters and is made from the Assamica variety. This gives the tea a slightly stronger flavor.
This Rwanda Rukeri comes from the Sorwatha tea plantation in Rwanda. This tea plantation has existed since 1972 and was started by Joe Werthem. This Joe Werthem was an exporter of tea from Kenya and Rwanda and was asked by the Rwandan government to also start a tea plantation in Kinihira, a remote area in Rwanda.
In this area there was actually no fertile land left to start a tea plantation on. The residents used the available land for their own food supply. An experiment was then started to drain swampy land and grow tea plants on it. This experiment was a success!
The necessary work was then done with an investment from the IMF in the form of building roads, electricity, water and fuel facilities. Construction began in 1975, and tea production began in 1978. The Sorwathe tea plantation now accounts for 12% of Rwandan tea production.
