Mei Zhan rock oolong is very special, with a distinct aroma of dried cherries and prunes.
Fruity and fruity at the same time, it is a must for those who like rock oolong or are new to it.
Mei Zhan
The Mei Zhan tea plant variety itself is typically made into oolong in Anxi province. It has become very popular among rock oolong enthusiasts in the Wuyi Mountains in modern times. In China now, there is a very big trend for softer roasted rock teas, it is no longer chic to drink incredibly strong roasted rock oolong.
Fortunately, this is also due to the changing taste and knowledge of tea in China, with more and more sophisticated tastes and understanding of good teas.
The uniquely long leaves of the Mei Zhan variety offer a bold flavour and aroma that fills a room. We've found, after much tasting, that it falls somewhere between Rou Gui and Huang Mei Gui in character, strength and flavor.
Mei zhan is generally full of fruity flavors and a stronger, saltier base note. This may sound strange, obviously it's not a salty tea :-) but rather a foody, aromatic one.
There are also hints of prunes.
The Chen family enhance the fruity flavours with their expert roasting over charcoal coals, an overnight process.
The tea evokes the flavours of prunes and bright tangerines, with just a hint of the latter character. I'd say it has hibiscus rose florals, clove and soft cinnamon, a deep, softly roasted, caramel character.
Mei Zhan preparation
To prepare Mei Zhan oolong tea, use soft water with low mineral content, or fine spring water if available. The total dissolved mineral content of the water should not exceed 200 mg/l. If only tap water is an option at home, be sure to use a water filter pitcher to remove the inappropriate chlorine taste from the water. If you add magnesium to the filter cartridge even better, it will make the water finer.
Use 7 grams of tea leaves to 150-170 ml of water, then after a quick wake up, you can have a long tea infusion in 10-20 second infusions, but I recommend experimenting with it anyway.
