Tea in Motion
DESCRIPTION

From this Assam, the second pick is the most beautiful.

Assam is a state in Northeast India with a population of about 26 million. The state is green and fertile which makes it home to some of India's best tea plantations. Assam black tea comes from this state and has been drunk outside India since 1838.

Since the 17th century, tea has been drunk in Europe, but back then it could not compete with the tea from China and Japan. Today, half of India's tea crop comes from Assam.

Assam tea is made from a stronger variety of tea plant the Camelia Sinensis Assamica, a variety with larger, stiffer leaves and a strong malty flavor. This variety is more resistant to the tropical conditions in Assam. Assam (along with South China) is one of only two regions in the world with native tea plants. Assam has a climate where it is very wet during the monsoon. There is 250-300 mm of rain per day while the temperature often reaches 40 degrees. This tropical climate, combined with the Assam variety, creates the malty flavor the tea is known for. Growing almost at sea level gives the tea a nice freshness, its malty flavor and bright color.
