Tea in Motion
DESCRIPTION
Purple tea?!

This tea has beautiful long, twisted leaves. The purple color appears when the tea gets wet. This is not due to the production method but to the tea variety itself. It is anthocyanin which gives the leaves this particular color.

Probably it is a protection form of the tea leaf to protect it at altitude, in cold conditions, from UV light. It is said that this purple tea, produced as green tea, contains more anti oxidants than other green tea varieties.

Kenia has 2 picking seasons, the rainy seasons in which the tea grows and is picked. The first is February/March to June and the second August to November/December.

This tea factory has the system of share holders. The leadership is chosen by the tea farmers themselves. Kapkoros tea factory consists of 7 departments where some 25,000 tea farmers live who bring their tea to this factory.

Tea farmers with livestock in the area have also benefited from the project, including the installation of drinking troughs for livestock. This helps protect the nearby river from pollution. Previously, cattle herders took their animals to the river to drink water, which led to water pollution and also safety issues.Young people in the area have also benefited from the project; including the establishment of a car wash/motorbike shed. The unemployed youth have formed groups that wash motorcycles and cars for willing community members for a fee. They also collect water for nearby shopping centers as an additional source of income.
