The bamboo, which has been used for this tea tray, is specially planted for this purpose. It is the bamboo species Phyllostachys edulis (Nan Zhu), also known as Turtle bamboo. The shoots of this bamboo can be eaten.

Bamboo is wonderful to use and can get wet well. Just don't leave water in the container and let it dry well after use before cleaning up.
