Matcha Yugen - Tea of Darkness
Matcha Yugen is different from other products from Marukyu-Koyamaen. It is a much darker-toned, deep tea with a dense texture that gives the feeling of drinking Koicha even when prepared as Usucha.
It boasts a fuller, more intense flavor than the Aoarashi and Chigi no Shiro varieties. And it is much more sophisticated than Matcha Isuzu. Tasting it, we find a perfect combination of flavors reminiscent of a fresh green, peanuts, herbs, giving way to a lingering sweetness with a touch of bitter aftertaste. What distinguishes Matcha Yugen from other Matcha of its level is precisely the sweeter flavor that is generally an important feature of higher grade Matcha. Matcha Yugen, or the tea of darkness as the name suggests, has a deep and rich taste that is not easily described in words and must be experienced firsthand.
The punctuation of yu-gen yu is a kind of affirmative enhancement: the depth is even deeper, the darkness is even darker, in which the door of secrets can open. According to the playwright and actor Zeami, the main task of an actor is to convey the flow of energy that once it comes to light or to be discovered, disappears into thin air.
For the Western thinker who devotes all his energies to flaunting what he possesses, this remains an unimaginable way of life. Instead, according to the Eastern mindset, concealment is a possible means of showing the essence, a thought that is also reflected in this tea.
Zeami Motokiyo explained Yugen with the following phrases:
Watching the sun sink behind a hill covered with flowers. Wandering through a huge forest with no thought of return. And, the subtle shadows of bamboo on bamboo.
The price of Marukyu-Koyamaen's Matcha Yugen entices us to recommend it to those new to the world of Matcha, but its mystery is appealing and chaotic, the inexperienced mouth may not know what to think of these dark flavors paired with fresh scents. We recommend it as a delicious stop between two teas, between the beginning and the end of the journey.
