Chasen Bamboo Gold
The Chasen (茶筅) is one of the indispensable accessories for Matcha preparation. It is a whisk traditionally made from a single piece of bamboo that is 9 to 12 cm long and 2-2.5 cm thick. It is used to properly prepare Matcha by making quick zig-zag movements with the chasen for a few seconds. This movement causes the Matcha and water to become a creamy, foamy whole.
The label on the product packaging may be different from the one shown in the photo, or absent, depending on availability from the supplier.
The chasen should be carefully cared for. During preparation, the top part of the bamboo is frayed, thus generating thin bristles folded inward which are called hosaki (穂先). The chasen holder is used to tidy up the thin wet hosaki after each use, thus helping to maintain the original shape of the chasen without any deformation.
Like any accessory made of natural material, the Chasen must be properly cared for and prepared when first used to ensure its long life. Read our article on how to prepare it for first use! Also you can discover 5 secrets for taking care of your Chasen!
