Common chashaku
The Chashaku (茶杓)commonis one of the basic utensils for the preparation of Matcha. It is used in the tea ceremony as an accessory that has the function of putting the Matcha from its container into the Chawan (cup used especially for this tea).
For its making in the past, different materials were used, such as mulberry wood, bamboo or silver. The most popular version of it today is made of bamboo, a material also used for the production of the Chasen, the whisk used in the preparation of Matcha. This realization was devised by Sen no Rikyū (千利休, 1522-1591).
Features
The Chashaku can come in different sizes, but the most common shape has a width that does not exceed one centimeter and is between 19-21.5 cm long.
Tsuyu 露, meaning the tip of the Chashaku is curved and designed to comfortably and effectively scoop Matcha. "Ottori 追取" the handle of the Chashaku is signaled by the groove called "Fushi 節, which then ends in the final part of the tool named "Kiridome 切止". The whole thing follows the grain of the bamboo.
