Decorticated licorice pieces

Licorice is a small perennial plant that grows in the Mediterranean and Middle East. Its roots, cut into sticks, chunks or ground into a powder, are used. The black chunks or candies we are accustomed to seeing commercially come from processing the juice, obtained by boiling the root. Pure licorice has a pleasant sweetish flavor reminiscent of aniseed, which is why it is used extensively in confectionery and liquor processing. In sticks it is particularly suitable for chewing/sucking as a pastime, and an excellent remedy for those who want to quit smoking.
