Gaba Ryokucha is a green Japanese tea from the beautiful Setoya Valley. This tea has been processed using a method where the leaves are left to wilt without access to oxygen, which is replaced by nitrogen. This process sharply increases the GABA content of the tea leaves. The designation ryokucha is because, unlike sencha, this tea has not undergone shaping.

Whether it's the beautiful scenery at Setoya or Tamiko's masterful work at shiage, I've finally found a GABA worth drinking.

GABA stands for gamma-aminobutyric acid. It is a neurotransmitter, a substance that transmits signals between nerve cells. GABA is the most common inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system.

GABA plays an important role in many processes in the brain, including:

  • mood regulation
  • - Sleep
  • - Muscle control
  • - Learning and memory
  • - Emotion regulation
  • - Anxiety
  • - Depression

GABA teas are often favored by people who suffer from anxiety or insomnia.
